Lestat de Lioncourt, Louis de Pointe du Lac, and the rest of the vampires from prolific author Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles book series are coming to Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment, as the two companies, along with Brian Grazer, have purchased the rights to Anne Rice’s eleven-book series known collectively as The Vampire Chronicles.

Deadline reports the breaking news of the acquired rights. In addition to the rights to adapt the eleven books as they please, the deal also means that Universal and Imagine own the rights to the screenplay adaptation of Rice's fourth Vampire Chronicles book, Tale of the Body Thief, which was adapted by her son, Christopher Rice.

Beginning with 1976's Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Chronicles follows Lestat de Lioncourt and vampires both fellow and foe throughout the centuries. Previously, the last entry in the series had been 2003's Blood Canticle, but Anne Rice recently announced a return to her world of literary vampires with the upcoming eleventh book in the collection, Prince Lestat, due out on October 28th.

Two of Rice's books in the collection—Interview with the Vampire and Queen of the Damned—have been adapted as feature films by Warner Bros. Now Universal and Imagine could remake these two already adapted books in addition to tackling the rest of the series.

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the team behind Universal's The Mummy reboot and future shared monster universe, will produce potential Vampire Chronicles projects. We'll keep Daily Dead readers updated on further developments.
