With Captain America: Civil War—the third entry in the star-spangled series—set to begin shooting next spring, the cast is taking a more clearly defined shape. In recent weeks, it was revealed that the film will include Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark and Chadwick Boseman as the Black Panther and today Marvel announced that Daniel Brühl has joined the growing cast.

Marvel has yet to officially announce what role Daniel Brühl will tackle in Captain America: Civil War, but there has been speculation that he will play a key villain. Brühl is perhaps best known for playing Fredrick Zoller in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, Niki Lauda in Ron Howard's Rush, and Daniel Berg in Bill Condon's The Fifth Estate.

Captain America: Civil War is scheduled to begin production next spring and is set for a May 6th, 2016 release, with brothers Anthony and Joe Russo (the directing duo behind this year’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier) returning to helm the third film off a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (both of whom scribed the first two Captain America movies and Thor: The Dark World).

The third installment in the super soldier franchise will be influenced to some extent by the Civil War comic book mini-series that was released in 2006 – 2007, though Marvel is rebooting the Civil War storyline on the paneled page next summer and the movie could follow that version more closely. In the original version, Iron Man and Captain America take opposite stances on the government's Superhero Registration Act, leading to confrontations of the verbal and physical variety amongst Earth's superheroes.

For more details on Captain America: Civil War, we have the official press release concerning Brühl's casting:

"Daniel Bruhl (“Rush,” “Inglourious Basterds”) has joined the cast of Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War,” set to rock the Marvel Cinematic Universe on May 6, 2016.

The celebrated actor earned Golden Globe, SAG, BAFTA and Critics’ Choice nominations for his role as Niki Lauda in director Ron Howard’s “Rush.” In addition to Howard, Bruhl has also worked with other esteemed directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Paul Greengrass, Anton Corbijn, and Michael Winterbottom.

Bruhl joins Chris Evans (Captain America), Robert Downey, Jr. (Iron Man), and Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) in “Captain America: Civil War,” with Joe and Anthony Russo returning to direct after this year's hit Marvel's “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”

“With Daniel's ability to deliver intense, nuanced performances, we knew we had found yet another great actor to share the screen with some of our biggest heroes,” said Producer Kevin Feige.

Bruhl is represented by Tavistock Wood Management, Players Agentur Management, and WME."
