Based on the red band trailer releases for Evil Dead, we had a feeling the movie would have a tough time receiving an R rating from the MPAA. This was confirmed earlier today, when director Fede Alvarez mentioned that the original cut of the movie received an NC-17 rating. Of course, no major studio production is going to stick with the NC-17 rating, so cuts were required to achieve the R rating.

Alvarez made mention of this recently on his Twitter account: "Was proud of scoring a NC17 when submitted! But we had to cut stuff out to get an R and get the film into theaters." While it's too early to know what was cut and what we may see pop up on Blu-ray/DVD, we hope that an unrated cut of the film planned for the home video release.

If you’re headed to SXSW, the world premiere of Evil Dead will be taking place at the event in March. For those not attending SXSW, the movie will be released to theaters everywhere on April 12th.

“Five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead and unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.

A core cast of young, fresh talent includes Jane Levy (Suburgatory) as Mia; Shiloh Fernandez (Deadgirl, Red Riding Hood) as David; Lou Taylor Pucci (Carriers) as Eric; Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield) as Olivia and Elizabeth Blackmore (Legend of the Seeker) as Natalie.”
