Vampires, Jaegers, Kaijus, a young author in peril: Guillermo del Toro has a lot on his plate right now with next week's debut of his TV series The Strain, the recent announcement that he'll be directing Pacific Rim 2 next year for a 2017 theater release, and the post-production on his horror movie Crimson Peak. But staying true to busy form, del Toro has added another project to his near-future workload, and it's much smaller than his robot brawling blockbuster.

In a recent interview with Collider, del Toro revealed that in February or March of next year, he will begin shooting a small black and white film with a bizarre tone. The filmmaker will take a hiatus from the Pacific Rim 2 pre-production that begins in August of this year to shoot this smaller movie in early 2015 before jumping back to the large-scale sequel that is scheduled to start shooting in late 2015.

Though he didn't discuss too many details about this new film's plot, del Toro did mention one specific actor he would like to have in what will be a tiny cast:

“It’s a very small cast. I would love to have John Hurt, and there’s an actress that I have in mind that is not well-known but I’ve seen her in a short film. That’s all she’s really done, one feature and one short, but she has an incredibly interesting taste and I’m gonna try her out for the main role.”

Though this mysterious film does have a title, del Toro prefers not to unveil it just yet, as he'd like the movie to be a concrete reality before he divulges too much information. He did, however, reveal that "there’s one great creature in it."

Guillermo del Toro has announced an April 7, 2017 release date for Pacific Rim 2 and he also mentioned that there are plans for an animated series that would come out before the sequel hits theaters. There are no specific story details, but we know that Guillermo del Toro has been working with screenwriter Zak Penn (X-Men 2, The Avengers) and Travis Beacham (Pacific Rim) on the new story that will follow Raleigh Becket and Mako Mori after the events of the first film. Here’s a tease from del Toro from a recent interview:

“Some people were wondering if we were going to do the prequel. I was never interested in doing that first wave of invasion. I’m going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one — but you will get really great spectacle.”

With Legendary now at Universal it looks like they’ll be distributing the sequel, as opposed to Warner Bros. Guillermo del Toro will be making the press rounds to promote The Strain for the next month or two, so we’ll have an opportunity to ask del Toro about The Strain, Pacific Rim 2, Crimson Peak, and other upcoming projects like this new film in the very near future.
