We return with the latest edition of the Indie Spotlight, highlighting the recent independent horror news sent our way. Today’s feature includes details on a comic anthology series featuring Alice Cooper, UK premiere details for Big Ass Spider!, information on the Karen Black fund, and much more:

Details on the Karen Black Fund: "Karen has been waging a battle for over two years with cancer. She has not talked about this publicly because she was hoping it would be cured and she could call herself a cancer survivor. Karen was diagnosed with ampullary cancer in November of 2010. After suffering through nausea, fainting and losing over thirty pounds, she was finally declared NED – No Evidence of Disease in July. But by December 2011 a small tumor developed and another surgery was in order, which left her completely bed-ridden. Her cancer seemed conquered though. By spring 2012 she was doing a lot better and could walk around and was almost normal. But in June 2012, the cancer came back – and it started spreading – one near her lungs and one in her lower back.

We started trying different things – through hit and miss we found some alternative treatments that seem to help. The cancer is minimized, but we know from past experience that it won’t be long before it comes back. BUT THERE IS HOPE. Karen’s family physician of many years told us of success she has had with several of her patients doing a treatment in Europe as part of a clinical study there. This is a medically supervised program and it targets Karen’s kind of cancer. In fact, we personally know two of the patients that have had remarkable recoveries from cancer there. So we know it works, and right now it is her best and only shot."

Beauty is Only Skinned Alive Premiere Details: "For some women, the foundation for confidence and success lies in a glamorous appearance...the loss of which becomes a life-altering tragedy, driving them to a pathological hatred of others!”

These words aptly introduce the 56th episode of the cult TV series, “Lee Martin’s The Midnight Hour,” premiering Thursday, April 5. “Beauty Is Only Skinned Alive” (S5, Ep8), is set in a small-town salon, where weary owner Bev (Sharon Sigler) is preparing to close up for the night. A bell connected to the front door is heard ringing but when Bev investigates, she sees no one. Fearing the worst, she picks up a night stick near her cash register, making a search of the shadowy salon…a move she soon regrets.

For hiding amongst the beauty care products and salon chairs is Ursula (Pauline Ann Johnson), a hideously disfigured woman whose bestial violence is matched only by her greed for hard, cold cash. The following day, two young women (Lillian Lamour, Andi Foster) visit the salon expecting to keep their appointments with Bev…but daylight hasn’t dispelled Ursula’s malevolent presence and nothing can prepare the women for the brutality that awaits them at “The Midnight Hour.”

Big Ass Spider! UK Premiere: "The Dead By Dawn Horror Film Festival announces today that director Mike Mendez’s horror-action comedy BIG ASS SPIDER! will have its official UK Premiere at the festival at midnight on Saturday April 27th. The festival, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, will run from Thursday, April 25th to the early hours of Monday, April 29th at the Filmhouse Cinema in Edinburgh, Scotland.

BIG ASS SPIDER! was produced by Patrick Ewald and Shaked Berenson for Epic Pictures, along with Travis Stevens and Klaus Von Sayn-Wittgenstein. From a script by Gregory Gieras, the film stars Greg Grunberg (“Heroes”), Lombardo Boyar (“Gone in Sixty Seconds”), Clare Kramer (“Gravedancers”) and Ray Wise.

BIG ASS SPIDER! tells the tale of a giant alien spider that escapes from a military lab and rampages across the city of Los Angeles. It is up to one clever exterminator (Grunberg) and his security guard sidekick (Boyar) to kill the creature before the entire city is destroyed."
