Summer camp takes a sinister turn in David Yarovesky's The Hive, playing in theaters for one evening only tonight courtesy of Fathom Events and Nerdist Industries. Ahead of The Hive's special theatrical release, Daily Dead caught up with co-writer/director David Yarovesky.

On The Hive's long journey to the big screen:

David Yarovesky: It’s been two years. People talk about it like it’s a marathon, but for me it’s been a two-year sprint. We started in July or August of 2013. I cranked out eleven drafts before we actually shot anything. Eleven drafts in three or four months. I’m really anal about it being as good as it possibly can be. I’d just be cranking them out and working through the kinks and making it better every time.

So then we went straight into shooting and after that it was like 20 weeks of editing. The Hive is so non-linear, it’s a puzzle, so it takes a little more time than editing a straightforward, linear narrative film.

Films that influenced The Hive:

David Yarovesky: I was inspired by They Live. If They Live is a movie about slavery through consumerism, this movie is about slavery through social media and being over-connected. That was really the nugget that started everything. I was also really influenced by Enter the Void. I was trying to create this hybrid, ten-headed beast of a movie.

On The Hive hitting theaters for one special night:

David Yarovesky: We made this movie on a found footage budget, and that’s putting it mildly. To be propped up on this pedestal is amazing, it’s already a giant win. We’re never going to have a 2,000 theater release across the country, but to be able to do a Fathom event where we’re in 500 theaters across the country for one night, people who like these kinds of movies can come and see it and enjoy it together in a theater the way I intended it to be when I shot it.

"Fathom Events and Nerdist Industries are partnering up to bring Nerdist Presents The Hive, the premiere of new zombie-thriller, to 500 select cinemas nationwide for a special one-night event on Monday, September 14 at 7:30 p.m. (local time).

ABOUT THE HIVE:

At the height of summer, Adam and Katie find love for the first time. Fellow camp counselors Clark and Jess couldn’t care less about the kids they’re overseeing as long as they can hook up. But, when a plane crashes nearby, their investigation unleashes a mysterious plague, putting all campers in danger.

As Camp Yellow Jacket slips into chaos, Adam wakes in a boarded-up cabin with no memory of who or where he is. His only clues are the notes he’s scrawled for himself and memories that aren’t his own. As his friends turn into monsters around him, the key to surviving the apocalypse is locked in one infected counselor’s mind.

Uniquely shot with four different lens/palates to give each frame its own look, and set to the music of internationally renowned music producer Steve Aoki, Nerdist Presents The Hive is an event that sci-fi horror fans won’t want to miss!"
