New casting details are shambling out of the tomb for Universal's The Mummy, as it has been revealed that Jake Johnson has joined the cast and Annabelle Wallis is in talks to play a lead role.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jake Johnson will appear in the new Mummy movie from Universal. Johnson is taking on a military role that was "written specifically for him." Well-known for playing Nick Miller on New Girl, Johnson recently stole scenes with his self-referential humor in Jurassic World.

Johnson joins Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation) and Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service) in the project, with the former rumored to portray an ex-soldier and the latter expected to play The Mummy.

Additionally, Variety reports that Wallis is in talks to star in a lead role as an archaeologist in the upcoming Mummy movie from Universal.

Wallis is no stranger to the horror genre, having recently starred as Mia in 2014's Annabelle. She will also appear in the upcoming The Brothers Grimsby and Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur.

Slated for a June 9th, 2017 release, The Mummy is set to be directed by Alex Kurtzman from a screenplay by Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange, Prometheus). Filming is expected to begin this April.

The Mummy will be the first of several new Universal Monster movies, with the studio having the ultimate goal of creating a shared cinematic universe including Wolf Man, Dracula, Van Helsing, the Bride of Frankenstein, the titular characters from Creature from the Black Lagoon and The Phantom of the Opera, and more.

Comprised of a sizable creative team of ten writers, the Universal Monsters reboot project is headed by Kurtzman and Chris Morgan, both of whom are producing The Mummy with Sean Daniel.

Details on Spaihts’ script for The Mummy have yet to be revealed, but the story is believed to take place in the modern day. We’ll keep Daily Dead readers updated as more information is unearthed.
