We recently reported that Lakeshore Entertainment is developing a new Underworld film. Though the new entry was originally expected to be a reboot, it's now been revealed to be an expansion of the series' pre-existing universe and will star a familiar vampiric face from 2012's Underworld: Awakening, though perhaps not the one fans of the franchise would expect.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, actor Theo James, who played the vampire David in 2012's Underworld: Awakening, will star in the upcoming, untitled Underworld movie. Theo James (Divergent) is set to star alongside two new female characters that are currently being cast. The latest chapter in the action horror series is planned to begin shooting in the spring of 2015.

Kate Beckinsale, who played the lead role of Death Dealer vampire Selene in three of the Underworld films, is not expected to return for the fifth movie. Lakeshore Entertainment's decision to stay within the franchise's pre-existing universe, however, does leave the door open for Selene and Michael's (Scott Speedman) potential return somewhere down the line.

Cory Goodman is penning the new Underworld movie, with Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi producing. Genre fans may remember Goodman as the writer of 2011’s Priest, which starred Paul Bettany and took place in a dystopian future in which beast-like vampires reignite a war with humans. Goodman also wrote the first draft of The Last Witch Hunter, an upcoming action horror film starring Vin Diesel. We'll keep Daily Dead readers updated on the new Underworld film as it develops.
