He opened doorways to other dimensions, conjured up creatures to frighten generations of readers, and put his literary characters through memorable mazes of madness. Despite his immeasurable contributions to the horror genre, the dark imaginative worlds of H.P. Lovecraft's stories never received an action figure line, even in the golden toy age of the late 1970's/early 1980's. Now one Kickstarter campaign is looking to give credit where it's due by bringing four memorable Lovecraft characters to action figure life like never before.

These are the four characters featured in the Legends of Cthulhu Retro Action Figure Toy Line:

"Spawn of Cthulhu: Extraterrestrial worshippers of the Great Old One known as Cthulhu.
Figure Specs: 3.75" tall, swivel head, jointed arms and legs
Accessories: Necronomicon (book), snap-on wings

The Cultist: A member of the Cult of Cthulhu, an organization of humans working to hasten Cthulhu’s return to power on earth.
Figure Specs: 3.75" tall, swivel head, jointed arms and legs
Accessories: Staff, dagger, ceremonial mask

The Deep One: An immortal undersea creature that serves only the all powerful Cthulhu.
Figure Specs: 3.75" tall, swivel head, jointed arms and legs
Accessories: Spear

The Professor: Adventurer, investigator, and the unfortunate hero whose journey brings him to the edge of madness.
Figure Specs: 3.75" tall, swivel head, jointed arms and legs
Accessories: Revolver, Cthulhu idol"

This Kickstarter campaign from Eddy Mosqueda and Ken Kelly is already fully funded, sitting well beyond its goal of $60,000. But with continued financing, the Legends of Cthulhu line can be expanded and enhanced, with incentives for supporters. Rewards include Legends of Cthulhu T-shirts, glassware, and many more goodies. Time will tell how far up the mountains of madness this endeavor will climb in the next 26 days, before the official funding occurs on Wednesday, July 9th. Interested in learning more? JUNE 9, 2014 (Chicago, IL): "Warpo, creator of artisan retro toys, is thrilled to announce today the launch of its Kickstarter to fund Legends of Cthulhu, the first retro-styled action figure line based on the characters of H.P. Lovecraft.

By enlisting legendary sculptor Eddy Mosqueda (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Masters of the Universe) and artist Ken Kelly (Micronauts, Manglor Mountain, KISS’ Destroyer album cover), Legends of Cthulhu was designed using a discipline of “method manufacturing”, a process Warpo coined for developing products with distinct artisanal, collectible quality.

Legends of Cthulhu is a four-figure line featuring iconic characters from the world of H.P. Lovecraft – The Professor, The Cultist, The Deep One, and Spawn of Cthulhu – created by the revered artists and sculptors who pioneered the look and feel of beloved retro action figures from the 1970s and 1980s. Each figure stands 3.75” tall, has 5 points of articulation, and comes with character-appropriate accessories. Figures will come packaged in a nostalgic, Kickstarter-exclusive blister-card, featuring original paintings by artist Ken Kelly.

“We’re creating collectible figures to sit right alongside our vintage figures from the past,” says Warpo president Bryan Katzel. “Warpo is the toy company we wanted in 1981, and our goal is to create the ‘most-bitchingest’ toys of forever!”

The Legends of Cthulhu Kickstarter launched today, with an initial fundraising goal of $60,000, and exciting stretch goals for amounts reached beyond that. To view the Kickstarter campaign, visit kickstarter.warpo.com.
