Fans can once again mark their calendars and place their bets for the next battle between the Kaiju and Jaegers, because Universal Pictures has penciled in Pacific Rim 2 for a 2018 release.

Deadline reports that Pacific Rim 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on February 23rd, 2018. The film had previously been slated to come out in April 2017 and eventually in August of 2017 before being temporarily pulled off of the release calendar.

John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Attack the Block) recently signed on to the sequel to play the son of Stacker Pentecost, the character portrayed by Idris Elba in the original film. In addition to playing the lead role, Boyega's UpperRoom Productions will co-produce the sequel with Legendary.

Steven S. DeKnight (Spartacus, Netflix’s Daredevil) will helm the sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 film. Derek Connolly (Jurassic World) was recently brought on to work on the screenplay for Pacific Rim 2, with an earlier draft written by Jon Spaihts (The Mummy, Doctor Strange, Prometheus).

A Legendary Pictures film, Pacific Rim 2 will be released by Universal. It remains to be seen whether or not the cast members who played the survivors of the first film will reprise their roles in the sequel, but we'll keep Daily Dead readers updated on future announcements.
