No Found Footage for [REC] 4: Apocalypse

With [REC] 3: Genesis set to be released stateside next week, we’re starting to hear a little bit more about the next sequel. During a recent interview with [REC] 3 director Paco Plaza, it was revealed that [REC] 4: Apocalypse would not be a found footage film.

Via BD: “It’s true that it takes place after ‘[REC] 2′. And it is going to be shot [differently]. It is not going back to found footage, it is going to be a cinematic narrative. A conventional film. I don’t want to say much more, I can’t say too much. I don’t want to get in trouble!”

It may have changed a bit since the original report, but here is the synopsis from [REC] 4: Apocalypse we reported on in January:

“Angela Vidal, the young television reporter who entered the building with the fireman, manages to make it out alive. But what the soldiers don’t know is that she carries the seed of the strange infection. She is to be taken to a provisional quarantine facility, a high-security installation where she will have to stay in isolation for several days. An old oil tanker, miles off shore and surrounded by water on all sides, has been especially equipped for the quarantine.”

Paco Plaza and Jaume Balagueró co-directed the first two films and went off to direct their own separate [REC] sequels, with Balagueró directing the fourth film. [REC] 3: Genesis is directed by Paco Plaza and stars Leticia Dolera, Diego Martín, Alex Monner, Mireia Ros, and Javier Botet. US readers can catch [REC] 3: Genesis on-demand starting on August 3rd with a DVD release to follow. A limited theatrical run is planned for September 7th.

[REC] 3 Synopsis: “Koldo and Clara are about to celebrate the most important day of their lives: their wedding.

The reception is being held at a beautiful old stately home in the middle of the countryside. Everything appears to be running smoothly and the bride and groom and their families are enjoying a wonderful day; that is until some of the guests start showing signs of a strange illness. Before they know what’s happening, the bride and groom find themselves in the middle of a hellish ordeal, as an uncontrollable torrent of violence is unleashed on the wedding.

Amidst the chaos, Koldo and Clara become separated and begin a desperate search for one another. What started off as an idyllic day quickly descends into a nightmare of the worst kind…”

I would have appreciated rec 3 more if it didn’t have the “rec” name. It was funny, touching and good fun BUT I was expecting to feel scared. Didnt feel like a rec movie.

Also, found footage gets old and boring sometimes BUT I loved it with rec and was disappointed and a bit taken aback when they switched to normal cinema mode. It made the movie cheesy and i felt like i was watching an alternate reality with a soundtrack. Again, if it didn’t have the rec name, I wouldn’t have noticed the cheesiness because I would have seen it as just another movie.

Now I googled rec 4 after finishing rec 3, expecting for the alternate reality break to be over and the series to continue, and read that I’m stuck in this mode. Ill go in with an open mind, but I’m a bit skeptical. Just giving my opinion. :)
