Hot on the heels of Justin Lin being revealed as the director Paramount Pictures has lined up for Star Trek 3, the third installment has now received a release date. As fans of the Star Trek franchise stretching back to the original series' premiere in 1966 might have expected, the theatrical debut of the next onscreen USS Enterprise adventure is slated for release in 2016, the year of Star Trek's 50th anniversary.

According to Box Office Mojo, Paramount Pictures will release Star Trek 3 on July 8th, 2016. The Star Trek franchise celebrates its big anniversary on September 8th, 2016, which will be exactly 50 years after the first episode of Gene Roddenberry's original Star Trek series aired in ’66.

Justin Lin has been set to direct Star Trek 3. Perhaps best known for directing four installments of The Fast and the Furious franchise—The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious, Fast Five, and Fast & Furious 6—Lin is also slated to direct a Jeremy Renner-starring Bourne film and will take the reigns on the first two episodes of True Detective‘s second season.

No official casting or story details for Star Trek 3 are known at this time, but it’s been rumored that the third entry in the reboot film series will take the Enterprise‘s crew into deep space. It's likely that we'll see see the return of cast members Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldaña, Karl Urban, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, and Alice Eve.
