It started beneath Raccoon City, and it spread worldwide, contaminating millions with a zombie virus created in the labs of the evil Umbrella Corporation. The rampant zombie infection in writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson's Resident Evil film series, based on the popular video games of the same name, hasn't left many humans standing after five films.

But Alice, the series' protagonist, and a few of her friends are survivors, and we saw them in a tight spot at the end of the last film, which was released in 2012. Fans have wondered when the next installment would hit theaters, and a recent interview with Anderson sheds some light on the topic.

In a recent interview with Collider, Paul W.S. Anderson revealed that he's currently writing the script for the sixth entry, which is tentatively titled Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, clearing up rumors that the film would start shooting this year. Here are some highlights from the interview:

On the title and progress of the sixth film's script:

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is the working title. It may end up being the final title, but that’s what’s written on the front page of my script… I’m right in the middle of [the first draft].”

On when production will begin:

“There are no set dates for shooting yet. I think we’re waiting until we have a first draft screenplay and then go from there."

On whether this is the last entry in the Resident Evil film series:

“That’s what’s on the title page, it’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, so absolutely.”

On writing the movie for 3D shooting:

“I firmly believe that you have to start thinking about the 3D even in the writing process... I approach my films right from the inception, I kind of write action scenes and pick out locations that I think and know—because I’ve done so much of it—will translate very well into 3D. Then when we build the sets, we build sets that I know will shoot well in 3D. It’s really, even from this point, 3D is something I’m definitely thinking about.”

Stay tuned for more updates on the latest Resident Evil film as it develops down the line.
