"Something in the mist!" Stephen King fans could eventually hear those words uttered on the small screen, as a TV series adaptation of the Master of Horror's 1980 novella, The Mist, is now in development.

TheWrap reports that Dimension Television (Scream TV series) is developing The Mist TV series with writer Christia Torpe (Danish series Rita). The series is inspired by both King's eerie novella and Frank Darabont's highly unsettling film adaptation that hit theaters in 2007.

According to TheWrap, "the series will tell an original story about a seemingly innocuous mist that seeps into a small town but contains limitless havoc. From psychological terrors to otherworldly creatures, the mist causes the town residents’ darkest demons to appear forcing them to battle the supernatural event and, more importantly, each other."

This adaptation apparently comes with King's blessing. Back in 2013, Dimension Films' Bob Weinstein was overseeing the development of The Mist TV series and wanted Darabont's involvement. So far, Darabont is not attached to this series, but we'll keep Daily Dead readers updated on further announcements. In the meantime, what do you think of a TV series based on The Mist? Also, for those unfamiliar with the source material, we have the official synopsis for The Mist below, as well as the trailer for Darabont's film adaptation.

The Mist synopsis (via StephenKing.com): "David Drayton, his son Billy, and their neighbor Brent Norton head to the local grocery store to replenish supplies following a freak storm. Once there, they and other local citizens are trapped by a strange mist that has enveloped the town and in which strange creatures are lurking. As the mist takes its toll on the nerves of those trapped in the store, a religious zealot, Mrs. Carmody begins to play on their fears to convince them that this is God’s vengeance for their sins and that a sacrifice must be made and two groups—those for and those against—are aligned. When it is realized that staying in the store may prove fatal, a small group including the Draytons, store employee Ollie Weeks, Amanda Dumfries, Irene Reppler, and Dan Miller attempt to make their escape. They find that what’s “out there” may be worse than what they left behind."
