From the late 1980's and well into the ’90's, HBO viewers watched their screens with mounting anticipation as a creaky metal gate was pushed open on a dark and stormy night. With the lightning flashing and the thunder crackling, the first-hand view of the camera wound its way up a path surrounded by tombstones before entering a decrepit mansion at the top of a hill. Once inside the home, the camera stepped through a secret passageway in a bookcase and wound its way down a spiral staircase, eventually stopping before a coffin. As horror hounds know, the coffin's lid would then fly open with its resident, the Cryptkeeper, springing to life, a grin on his face and a cackle emanating from his dusty throat. Many people have fond memories of this introduction to Tales From the Crypt, and a group of visual effects artists have shown their love of the show by recreating the iconic opening in full CG.

A fan film replicating HBO's Tales From the Crypt opening, the CG video was created by Damien Peinoit, Adel Benabdallah, Toufik Mekbel, and Omar Meradi. The introduction is accompanied by Danny Elfman's devilishly fun score.

Tales From the Crypt isn't available on Blu-ray yet, but maybe this will help convince the powers that be that fans are eager for a high-definition upgrade. We'll keep Daily Dead readers updated on any new announcements on that front, but in the meantime you can check out the CG intro video below (via Reddit).
