Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella are confirmed to star in Universal's The Mummy, which has now received a new release date.

According to Collider, Cruise will indeed star in The Mummy along with Boutella, who made quite an impression as the slice-and-dice killer Gazelle in Kingsman: The Secret Service. Neither of their roles have been revealed, but it's believed that Boutella will play The Mummy, with Cruise rumored to portray an ex-Navy Seal.

Originally slated to come out on March 24th, 2017, The Mummy is now set to hit theaters on June 9th, 2017—the same release date as World War Z 2.

Set to be directed by Alex Kurtzman from a screenplay by Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange, Prometheus), The Mummy will be the first of several new Universal Monster movies, with the studio having the ultimate goal of creating a shared cinematic universe including Wolf Man, Dracula, Van Helsing, the Bride of Frankenstein, the titular characters from Creature from the Black Lagoon and The Phantom of the Opera, and more. Comprised of a sizable creative team of ten writers, the Universal Monsters reboot project is headed by Kurtzman and Chris Morgan.

Details on Spaihts' script for The Mummy are largely unknown, but the story is believed to take place in modern times. We'll keep Daily Dead readers updated as more information is unearthed.
