Weekend Box Office Update

The LEGO Movie once again claimed the top spot at the box office, although it wasn't too surprising given the competition this weekend. Both new releases, 3 Days to Kill and Pompeii, had scaled back theatrical releases and a limited appeal. 3 Days to Kill only had a production budget of $28 million, so it earning $12.3 million is respectable. On the other hand, Pompeii had a production budget over $100 million and it's not going to make that back in US theaters alone.

Everything else in the top ten earned under $10 million this weekend, so there's not too much of interest, except for the fact that Frozen is nearing $400 million in the US and $1 billion worldwide. It should only take another week or two for the movie to cross both of those marks.

Next week sees the release of Non-Stop and Son of God. Will either be able to take out The LEGO Movie? We'll find out one week from today. Until then, here's a look at this weekend's top ten:

1. The LEGO Movie - $31,450,000
2. 3 Days to Kill - $12,300,000
3. Pompeii - $10,010,000
4. RoboCop - $9,400,000
5. The Monuments Men - $8,100,000
6. About Last Night - $7,400,000
7. Ride Along - $4,667,000
7. Frozen - $4,357,000
9. Endless Love - $4,301,000
10. Winter’s Tale - $2,130,000
