Three new movies opened in theaters across the US this weekend, but none were able to overtake Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The latest film in the long running "Apes" franchise, pulled in another $36 million and has earned a total of $138.9 million in the US.

In second place was The Purge: Anarchy, which earned a very respectable $28.3 million. There was some uncertainty on how this movie would fare, since it had all new characters and not as much star power as the first, but it got very close to The Purge's $34 million opening weekend. With a debut like this, it's very likely that Blumhouse and Universal will quickly move forward on a third installment.

Planes: Fire & Rescue took third place with $18 million, while Sex Tape placed fourth with $15 million. Transformers: Age of Extinction added another $10 million over the weekend, bringing its US total to $227.1 million. The bottom five didn't see too much activity, but movies like 22 Jump Street and Maleficent continue to add to their already impressive totals.

Next weekend sees the release of Hercules, And So It Goes, and Lucy. Here are the top ten results for this weekend:

1. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - $36,000,000
