Weekend Box Office Update

This wasn't a huge weekend for new movies at the box office, but Identity Thief isn't complaining. The R-rated comedy held onto the top spot for another week with $14 million and has earned $93.7 million since opening.

Looking at previous releases from The Rock, second place for Snitch wasn't bad at all. This was more of a limited release on 2,500 screens, and the movie's $13 million opening weekend places it around the same as Walking Tall and better than Faster.

Dark Skies opened on 2,300 screens and took sixth place with $8.8 million. At first, this may seem like a terrible opening, but this was a Blumhouse production. Like other releases from Blumhouse, the movie was produced on a small budget of $3.5 million. Dark Skies won't be a runaway hit, like Insidious, but we don't think this movie will be losing money after it hits Blu-ray and DVD.

Silver Linings Playbook has been enjoying all of the Oscar buzz, which helped it cross the $100 million mark this weekend. It's unlikely that Warm Bodies will be able to hang around in the top ten for another week, but the movie added another $4.75 million to its total. Next week sees the release of  The Last Exorcism Part II, Phantom, Jack the Giant Slayer, and 21 and Over. Here are the top ten results for this weekend:

1. Identity Thief - $14,064,000
2. Snitch - $13,000,000
3. Escape from Planet Earth - $11,013,000
