Bringing together characters from different comic book series from diverse eras, the Battleworld setting of Marvel's new Secret Wars is shaping up to be a paneled page experience unlike anything we've seen to date, and for horror hounds, the incorporation of the Marvel Zombies world into the mix really ramps up the anticipation for select segments in the grand Secret Wars storyline kicking off this summer. First, it was revealed that Age of Ultron Vs. Marvel Zombies will come out this June, and not long after that announcement was made, the Marvel Zombies Battleworld-set series was unveiled, giving us a look at more macabre mayhem from Marvel this summer.

Revealed on Bloody Disgusting, the Marvel Zombies tie-in to the new Secret Wars story arc will star monster slayer Elsa Bloodstone, a character who drew comparisons to Buffy Summers upon her debut in the early 2000s.

Simon Spurrier, who is penning the series, revealed in an interview on Marvel.com that Elsa will travel beyond The Wall in Battleworld that separates the living from the living dead. She'll face zombified villains from Marvel canon in her journey through the Deadlands, and though this Battleworld-set series will affect events in other Secret Wars storylines, it is expected to also work as a standalone experience that zombie fans can dig into.

To give readers an idea of what to expect in the new Marvel Zombies series, Spurrier revealed some of his original pitch for the project:

"To give you a peek behind the scenes, in the pitch I spitballed images of a zombie Doc Octopus, limbless and rotten, heaving itself along by its one remaining tentacle; a zombie Devil Dinosaur, driven mad by the meaty scent of the Moonboy corpse lashed to its back but unable to reach it with its tiny, tiny arms; a zombie Blob, emaciated and swarming with flies, dragging the leathery folds of its stretched skin behind itself. And so on. Fun."

Featuring Kev Walker's iconic illustrations to go along with Spurrier's potent prose, Marvel Zombies #1 hits shelves in June. We have a look at the cover art for the first issue below (the first cover was crafted by Ken Ashley and the second cover comes from Greg Land).
