During Comic-Con 2014, we were given a tour of the Sideshow Collectibles booth, specifically to check out their extensive line of recently announced collectibles from Court of the Dead. An original IP from Sideshow, this is more than just another release from the high-end collectibles studio and horror fans are going to want to keep an eye on this line-up.

Speaking with Sideshow’s Creative Director, Tom Gilliland, it was easy to see that this is a passion project for him and the team of talented artists who have brought these characters to life. Gilliland mentioned that he has spent more than a year creating the characters and original story that make up Court of the Dead and it really shows.

The tour we were given included a look at twelve pieces from their line-up, including two previously released pieces (Death’s General and The Red Death), the Queen of the Dead premium format figure that will soon be available, the recently revealed Death’s Siren premium format figure, and seven other pieces that should all be released over the next couple of years.

What really amazed me was the level of detail that went into not only each piece, but the story behind the characters and how they fit into this world. Each piece really tells a story, from the pose and accessory on the character themselves, to the highly detailed base that helps tie these characters together.

The sky’s the limit for this series and it’s really up to collectors and their interest in this property. While we saw eleven pieces, there are certainly more formats and characters that could show up, and Tom Gilliland can see this property making its way to video games and other formats. In fact, he already confirmed that they are working on a graphic novel and we’ll have more details on that release in the very near future.

While I certainly love the big properties that Sideshow Collectibles has been working with, it hard not to get excited when you see these pieces up close and see the passion that the team has for Court of the Dead. Sideshow has big plans for their original IP and I can’t wait to see the world of Court of the Dead brought to life one amazing figure at a time.
