“The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.” With filming now underway in South Africa on the first film adaptation of Stephen King’s epic The Dark Tower book series, EW has unveiled an official image of Idris Elba as The Gunslinger, aka Roland Deschain.

EW's image shows Elba's Gunslinger with his revolvers at the ready, which he'll have to use with Matthew McConaughey's villainous Man in Black on the prowl.

Directed by Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair) and currently filming in South Africa, The Dark Tower also stars Tom Taylor as Jake Chambers, Fran Kranz as Pimli, Katheryn Winnick, and Jackie Earle Haley as Sayre. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on February 17th, 2017 from Sony.

Comprised of eight novels and numerous short stories and comic books (and referenced in other books as well), King’s The Dark Tower series began with 1982’s The Gunslinger, which follows Roland of Gilead (aka The Last Gunslinger) as he pursues The Man in Black through the Mid-World, a dying place with similarities to our own realm.

The upcoming film will not focus solely on the plot of The Gunslinger, instead opting to start somewhere in the middle of the overall Dark Tower story. Stay tuned to Daily Dead for future updates.
