Lock your doors, pull the curtains, and turn off the lights, because the Annual Purge is coming back. Debuting in back-to-back years, The Purge and The Purge: Anarchy—both written and directed by James DeMonaco—have grossed a combined $200 million with a melded budget of $12 million, so it was no surprise when it was revealed back in October that Universal, Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes are moving forward with The Purge 3. We now know when to expect the next night of mayhem, as The Purge 3’s release date has been announced.

According to Box Office Mojo, Universal will unleash The Purge 3 on July 1st, 2016. Series creator James DeMonaco will handle scripting duties on the third flick and is looking to direct, as well. Reprising their roles as producers are Sebastian Lemercier, Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum, and Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form.

For those unfamiliar with the franchise, the films focus on the Annual Purge, a twelve-hour period where all crime is legal, including murder. The rule was put in place by the “New Founding Fathers of America” in order to reduce crime throughout the rest of the year.

Along with Platinum Dunes, Blumhouse and Universal were behind the first two Purge films and last July signed a ten-year extension on their production/distribution contract that includes both film and TV, keeping the future of the popular franchise under their umbrellas for another decade. No plot details or shooting dates have been revealed at this time, but we’ll let Daily Dead readers know when more details surface.
