Today sees the release of Sanitarium on DVD and digital services, and we had the movie's three directors take part in our latest Q&A feature. Continue reading to learn about their love of anthology horror, their work on Sanitarium, and plans for a sequel:

Thanks for taking the time to talk with us. What was your experience with anthology horror movies growing up?

Bryan Ortiz: Anthology based work has always had a special place in my heart. I grew up with classic shows like Twilight Zone, Night Gallery, Tales from the Crypt. I also grew up watching a lot of anthology films like Tales that Witness Madness, Tales of Terror, Trick or Treat, The Signal, and Fears of the Dark, to name a few. I was always in love with the idea of small vignettes collected together with a central theme. The idea of different stories and different visions presented in a film was always so inspiriting.

Can you tell me how the idea for Sanitarium came about? With so many indie horror films being released, convinced you to move forward with this particular project?

Kerry Valderrama: Sanitarium was created from the idea of wanting to bring back the horror of the mind and having the ability to be able to create a variety of interesting characters and being to experience there down whirl spiral into madness but in a very grounded way.

When it came to the other directors involved, how were they chosen? What did each to the table?

Bryan Ramirez: We have all loved what each of us has done in the effort to bring more films to San Antonio, and admired each others work. We have a really unique outlook on films and styles that we each work in and it shows in our stories. There's something for everyone.

Based on your credits, it seems like you spend more time acting that directing. Which do you prefer and why?

Kerry Valderrama: I began acting locally in San Antonio and then moved into directing after writing my first feature "Garrison " Directing is very much what I prefer now but I am very grateful to have been on the other side of the camera.

You were able to bring in some genre icons, such as Robert Englund and Malcolm McDowell. Was it difficult to get them on board and can you tell me about your experience with them on set?

Kerry Valderrama: We had an amazing casting director and were very fortunate that everyone responded well to the material. The experience with the entire cast of "Sanitarium" was a dream come true and I will be eternally grateful in the opportunity in being able to have worked with all of them.

Bryan Ortiz: Working with Malcolm McDowell was an experience I will never forget. Legends are definitely in their own league when it comes to acting. I am grateful for the experience in working with one.

What was the biggest challenge in getting this movie and your segment made?

Bryan Ramirez: My dolls kept talking to me.

Kerry Valderrama: We built the underground bunker on "Up to the Last Man" from scratch in a warehouse and on a very limited budget, which was extremely difficult.

Bryan Ortiz: For me, scheduling and getting the production up on its feet. As the first one out the gate there was an added pressure of being the first with a new crew and setting the bar for the rest of the production. Luckily, I was blessed with an amazing crew who helped really get the ball rolling and made me look good.

Are there already plans to return to the Sanitarium any time soon?

Kerry Valderrama: Yes, we are currently in development for both "Sanitarium" Volume 2 and a Television Series. We also have just released a comic book version for "Sanitarium" issue #1 "Monsters Are Real" which is currently available on Nook and Kindle.
