James Wan and Blumhouse have another hit on their hands with Insidious Chapter 2. The horror sequel easily won the weekend at the US box office with an estimated $41 million. The movie carried an estimated production budget of $5 million, so it easily made back its budget and marketing costs in the first weekend alone. This is the second movie from James Wan to cross the $40 million mark this year. Back in July, The Conjuring had a $41.8 million opening weekend.

The Family was the other big movie that opened this weekend. The R-rated mob comedy carried a budget of $30 million, but only managed to earn $14.5 in its first weekend, even thought it starred Robert DeNiro and Michelle Pfeiffer. Nothing else in the top ten managed to earn more than $7 million, so it was a relatively slow weekend aside from Insidious Chapter 2.

Next week sees the wide release of Battle of the Year and Prisoners, along with a limited release for I Spit on Your Grave 2. Here are the top ten box office results for this weekend:
