When a sequel to Insidious was officially announced earlier this month, it was revealed that it would continue the story of the original movie. Specific plot details have not been given, but two returning characters have been confirmed:

When talking to Dread Central, Leigh Whannell announced that Specs and Tucker will be back for the sequel:

"I can say that yes, my character will be seen in Insidious 2... It may probably bum a lot of people out, though, to hear this news. It's part of the reason I don't even read the internet message boards anymore; there was this hatred that spewed out from fans saying 'I hated those guys! They sucked! They ruined the movie!' so there will probably be a lot of people out there who will be disappointed to hear that the Specs and Tucker characters will be coming back. (laughs)"

Insidious director James Wan is currently working on The Warren Files, so it is expected that he'll get to the Insidious sequel as his next project. Paranormal Activity‘s Jason Blum and Oren Peli will return as producers. Production is expected to begin later this year, with Insidious 2 hitting theaters in 2013.
