Those who tuned into the two-episode Season 3 finale of Penny Dreadful last night witnessed a powerful final scene followed by a title card announcing "The End." It turns out those words didn't just mean the conclusion of the third season, but the finale of the entire series.
Showtime announced the end of Penny Dreadful with a heartfelt video (see below) posted on Facebook and Twitter. The video takes a look at the final moments of the show with behind-the-scenes footage of the cast and crew reflecting on the Demimonde's epic journey throughout three seasons.
Speaking with EW, Showtime CEO David Nevins discussed the decision to not announce the show's end until the final seconds of the last episode:
"We could have maybe tempered the emotional ending and given people a little warning, but what’s the fun in that? Who wants to be warned that there’s going to be a surprise to come? It just seemed like the not-bold choice. So we said, “We’re going to end it, and there will be a title card that says, ‘THE END.’ And that’s the end of the story, when that title card comes up.”"
