Since she first appeared in the video game world in 1996, Lara Croft has explored some of the world's most gorgeous—and dangerous—locations on both the big and small screens. Played by Angelina Jolie in two film adaptations, Lara Croft will next be brought to life by Alicia Vikander in Warner Bros.' new Tomb Raider film, and official images reveal the actress as the daring adventurer.
Unveiled by Vanity Fair, the official images from the new Tomb Raider movie feature Lara Croft in what looks to be a jungle as well as on a beach.
According to Vanity Fair, the new Tomb Raider film will feature a 21-year-0ld Lara investigating the mysterious vanishing of her father in a tomb near Japan. The official plot details from Vanity Fair go on to explain her origin-setting adventure:
“Suddenly, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Lara, who—against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit—must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown. If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name tomb raider.”
Directed by Roar Uthaug (The Wave, Cold Prey) Tomb Raider will be released in theaters on March 16th, 2018, from Warner Bros. In addition to Vikander, the film also features Dominic West, Walton Goggins, and Daniel Wu.
When we spoke with Roar back in 2016, he spoke briefly about his intentions with the new Tomb Raider movie, saying, "hopefully I will bring some of the same sensibilities that I brought to The Wave to the Lara Croft universe."
