We've known for a while that Robert Rodriguez planned a trilogy of Machete films, but like Sin City 2, we weren't sure if other projects would take priority. A new report reveals that Machete Kills is moving ahead and could begin shooting this April:
As first reported by Deadline, Robert Rodriguez is working with producer Alexander Rodnyansky on the sequel and many of the original cast members are expected to return. It was noted that Danny Trejo is in talks to reprise his role, but that feels like a formality at this point.
Here's the synopsis for the sequel: "The new film finds Machete recruited by the U.S. Government for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man. Machete must battle his way through Mexico to take down a madman cartel leader and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space. Machete takes on an army in an effort to dismantle a plan for global anarchy."
The original film was released in 2010 and starred Danny Trejo, Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Steven Seagal, Michelle Rodriguez, Jeff Fahey, Cheech Marin, Don Johnson, Lindsay Lohan, and Tom Savini. With an estimated budget of $10.5 million, the movie earned $26.5 million domestically and $17.5 million internationally.
Robert Rodriguez previously mentioned that he had already secured funding for a number of films including Machete Kills and Sin City 2: “Sin City 2 is going good, we’re just finishing the script for that, we already got the money. We have everything we need so we can just start shooting as soon as we get the pages. And it’s the same thing for Machete 2. We’ve already got the budget, just waiting for the script. As soon as we’re finished writing we get to start the shoot.”
With filming expected to start in the next few months, keep an eye out for casting updates in the coming weeks.
