Happy Friday, everyone! As the end of this year’s Women in Horror Month is sadly nearly upon us, we have one more batch of amazing horror (and genre-adjacent) short films for you all to enjoy that were helmed by some great female filmmakers from all over the world. First up is Scratch from Emma Bell (who many fans should know from The Walking Dead and Frozen), and then we have Becca Flinn-White’s spookfest The Candlelight Witch on tap. Next up is Blackbird, which Screamfest recently added to their online short film channel, and to close things out, we have Špela Čadež’s animated short, Nighthawk, which has a darkly comedic streak to it that I really appreciated.

Scratch (Directed by Emma Bell)
Synopsis: When a repressed 1950s housewife is left alone by her philandering husband, she makes a horrifying discovery about the noises in the house that are coming from the walls.
The Candlelight Witch (Directed by Becca Flinn-White)
Synopsis: To pass the time during a blackout, three siblings tell a scary story that proves to be more dangerous than legend.
Blackbird (Directed by Charlotte Stente Nielsen & Tim Fellingham)
Synopsis: Two souls cross paths in an isolated wilderness. RIDER, who is suffering from amnesia following a motorcycle crash. And ROSE, on the run. They both take shelter in an abandoned cottage, where they start to piece things back together.
Nighthawk (Directed by Špela Čadež)
Synopsis: Attempting to remove an unresponsive badger from a dark road, a police patrol soon realizes that the animal is not dead but rather dead drunk. Things take an even stranger turn when the creature wakes up.
Heather A. Wixson was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs, until she followed her dreams and moved to Los Angeles in 2009. A 14-year veteran in the world of horror entertainment journalism, Wixson fell in love with genre films at a very early age, and has spent more than a decade as a writer and supporter of preserving the history of horror and science fiction cinema. Throughout her career, Wixson has contributed to several notable websites, including Fangoria, Dread Central, Terror Tube, and FEARnet, and she currently serves as the Managing Editor for Daily Dead, which has been her home since 2013. She's also written for both Fangoria Magazine & ReMind Magazine, and her latest book project, Monsters, Makeup & Effects: Volume One will be released on October 20, 2021.
