Stephen Sommers' 1999 reboot of The Mummy was a box office success, but opted for a feel closer to Indiana Jones than the original films. Horror fans looking for something more should be happy to learn that Universal has hired the original writer of Prometheus for a new version of The Mummy.
Variety reports that Jon Spaihts has been hired by universal and will be crafting a script that will be darker and scarier than the previous Sommers series of films:
"I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with 'Prometheus': to go back to a franchise's roots in dark, scary source material, and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven't seen before,"
Jon Spaihts created the original script for Ridley Scott that turned into Prometheus after Damon Lindelof was brought on board. Since then, he's worked on a number of projects including The Darkest Hour and has multiple projects in various stages of development.
