The Exorcist TV Series in Development

According to a new report, a TV series based on The Exorcist is in development. Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene) is currently adapting the story into a 10-episode TV series and is working with producer Roy Lee (The Grudge, The Ring, The Departed).

Vulture noted that this adaptation will follow "the events leading up to a demonic possession and especially the after-effects of how a family copes with it: In short, not well (really, after you start seeing stuff like this, can you blame them?), and when medical and psychiatric explanations fail, the desperate family turns to the church, with Father Damien Karras finally brought in to attempt the exorcism."

At this time the TV series is still in the early development stages and will not be shopped to networks for another couple of weeks. We'd imagine that most major networks would be interested in taking on this series, but are hoping to see this end up on a premium cable station so we don't have to worry about it being edited down for content.

In other news, it looks like The Exorcist is not the only exorcism-related TV series in development. Producer Don Murphy (Transformers) and Susan Montford (Angryfilms) are reportedly working on The Exorcist Handbook, an original series following a man "who only became an exorcist to help the woman he loves." We'll have updates on both series as more information becomes available.
