Weekend Box Office Update

Oz The Great and Powerful had no problem claiming the top spot this weekend, earning $80.2 million. That's more than eight times what Jack the Giant Slayer pulled in second place, and it's the biggest opening of the year. Critic and audience reaction has been positive, so that should help Oz with long term success at the box office. While the $80 million is a huge win, it still has plenty of tickets to sell in order to make back its $215 million production budget.

Dead Man Down was the only other new movie this week and took fourth place. The movie had more of a limited release on 2,188 screens and earned $5.3 million. We have a bit of a dry spell coming up for horror theatrical releases, but The Last Exorcism Part II still managed to hang out in the top ten. In tenth place, the movie earned $3.1 million and has made $12 million since opening.

Oz should be able to hold onto the top spot next week without issue. The Call opens on 2,500 screens and Warner Bros. will be releasing The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, which seems to have more of a limited appeal than Oz. Here are the top ten results for this weekend:
