It has just been revealed that Ben Wheatley will be directing the first episodes of the upcoming season of Doctor Who. The Kill List, Sightseers, and A Field in England director will be taking a bit of time off feature projects to tackle the first two episodes of Series Eight.

According to ScreenDaily, he'll be working on both episodes later this year and early next year, with plans for the new series to air in fall 2014. Here's what Wheatley had to say about joining the Doctor Who team:

“I am very excited and honoured to be asked to direct the first two episodes of the new series of Doctor Who. I’ve been a fan since childhood (Tom Baker is my Doctor if you are asking)...

....I’ve been watching the current run of Doctor who with my son and have discovered it all over again. The work that has been done is amazing. I’m really looking forward to working with Peter Capaldi and finding out where Steven Moffat is planning to take the new Doctor.”

Back in August, Peter Capaldi was officially announced as the new Doctor in the upcoming season. Before that, there will be a 50th Anniversary episode and a Christmas special, with one of these episodes presumably leading to the Doctor's regeneration into Capaldi's version of the Doctor.
