Weekend Box Office Update

It's no surprise that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes won the weekend, but the series is back in a big way. Rise of the Planet of the Apes was a modest success when it was released back in 2011, earning $54.8 million on its opening weekend at the US box office. However, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes easily eclipsed that by earning an estimated $73 million over the weekend and was well received by both fans and critics. Another Apes sequel is already in the works and expect additional sequels to move forward if this kind of box office performance continues.

In second place was Transformers: Age of Extinction, which added another $16.5 million to its total. To date, the movie has earned $752 million worldwide. Tammy took third place with $12.9 million and, although none of the other films were able to crack the $10 million mark, 22 Jump Street and Maleficent have had a solid run at the box office, so anything they can add to their total is profit at this point.

Next week sees the release of Planes: Fire & Rescue, The Purge: Anarchy, and Sex Tape. Here are the top ten results for this weekend:

1. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - $73,000,000
2. Transformers: Age of Extinction - $16,500,000
3. Tammy - $12,910,000
