It's a fate worse than any Blockbuster late fee: if you watch the tape, you die one week later. Based on the 1998 Japanese film, Ringu, the Naomi Watts-starring The Ring (2002) and The Ring Two (2005) pitted Watts' Rachel against Samara, a long-haired ghost girl who kills the watchers of a cursed tape, leaving their bodies chillingly mutilated. Now The Ring 3 is in development and a director has been chosen to helm the third film in the franchise.

According to Variety, F. Javier Gutiérrez has been hired by Paramount Pictures to direct the third installment in The Ring series, currently referred to as The Ring 3. It's uncertain whether or not Naomi Watts will return in any capacity, and plot details are also unknown at this time, though Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are set to produce.

The director of Before the Fall, a 2008 film about an impending meteorite impact on Earth, F. Javier Gutiérrez now has plenty on his plate, as he's also attached to direct the reboot of The Crow. We'll keep Daily Dead readers updated on The Ring 3 as it moves further into development.
