To cap off Marvel's Hall H panel at Comic-Con this year, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 was officially announced for a summer of 2017 release, and since that reveal, Guardians of the Galaxy has opened in theaters and made over $300 million worldwide. Now fans are wondering what to expect in the already anticipated sequel, which Writer/Director James Gunn shed some light on in a recent interview.

*Spoiler Warning* If you haven't seen Guardians of the Galaxy, then the following contains minor spoilers. In an interview with Empire, James Gunn addressed two big subjects that fans expect to factor into the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel to some extent: The reveal of Peter Quill's (aka Star Lord, played by Chris Pratt) dad and the presence of ultra-villain Thanos, and we have excerpts and insights from that interview.

On who Peter Quill's dad is:

"It’s definitely not the character who it is in the comics, I’ll say that much."

For those unfamiliar, in the comic books Peter Quill's dad is a character steeped in royalty: J'son, aka Jason of Spartax: the Emperor of the Spartoi Empire. Though seeing Peter discover he's in line for any kind of throne would be intriguing, the altered plans James Gunn and a select few at Marvel have for their version of the biological reveal should be interesting. Peter's dad is looking to be such a big influence in the movie series, that Gunn said he needed to know who he was before shooting the first film so that all of the specifics—including Yondu's role as an adoptive father via tractor beam—make sense in the long run.

On how big of a role Thanos will play in Guardians of the Galaxy 2:

"He will show up [in the sequel] if he helps our story and he will not show up at all if not."

Gunn explained that the Guardians will have other threats on their plate in the sequel, so Thanos isn't necessary. But with his daughter Nebula and adoptive daughter Gamora still roaming the film's universe, Thanos' presence could be felt.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is slated for a July 28th, 2017 release. Although its premiere is pretty far down the line, we'll keep Daily Dead readers updated on Guardians of the Galaxy 2 as new details surface.
