VCR board games: they brought tabletop entertainment to a new, interactive level. In Beyond the Gates, though, two brothers discover a video board game that's a little too interactive, transferring them to another world where their dad's soul is on the line and a roll of the dice could lead to eternal torment. The Barbara Crampton-produced movie is now filming with Jackson Stewart behind the camera and a group of talented cast members playing the mysterious game.
Press Release -- "LOS ANGELES, CA (April 27, 2015) – Jackson Stewart has set indie horror favorites Graham Skipper (ALMOST HUMAN), Chase Williamson (THE GUEST), and Brea Grant (HALLOWEEN 2) as the leads in BEYOND THE GATES, a throwback paranormal movie in the spirit of horror classics such as Phantasm, The Beyond, and Poltergeist.
Matt Mercer (CONTRACTED), Justin Welborn (FX’s “Justified”), Henry LeBlanc (“The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”), Jesse Merlin (FDR: AMERICAN BADASS), David Bruckner (co-director of V/H/S), and Pierson Ryan (“Red Team Go”) round out the cast.
In BEYOND THE GATES, two estranged brothers reunite seven months after their father's disappearance to liquidate his anemic video store. While there, they unearth an old VCR board game that acts as an inter-dimensional hub to a nightmare world where their Father's soul is trapped and can only be saved by playing the game. The film is an adventure horror that pays loving tribute to the VHS format, video stores, and board games of the era.
Stewart co-wrote the screenplay with Stephen Scarlata (JODOROWSKY’S DUNE). Destroy All Entertainment’s Amanda Mortimer will produce alongside Barbara Crampton and Lodger Films partners Georg Kallert and Rob Schroeder. Gabriela Revilla Lugo will executive produce.
Crampton also stars in Lodger Films’ SUN CHOKE, which will premiere at the Stanley Film Festival in Denver this weekend along with Destroy All Entertainment’s SOME KIND OF HATE, directed by Adam Egypt Mortimer, starring Ronen Rubinstein, Grace Phipps, and Sierra McCormick.
Stewart's short film SEX BOSS screened at various international film festivals and won the award for best comedy at the Hollywood Underground Film Festival. Additionally, he has written for the second longest running genre show in American history, the CW hit "Supernatural". This is his first feature.
