Viewers first saw it unknowingly unleashed in a research lab at the beginning of 2003's 28 Days Later, but the Rage virus was just getting started, spreading from an infected chimpanzee to most of England's population, turning normal people into bloodthirsty killers that roamed the UK in 28 Days Later and its 2007 sequel, 28 Weeks Later. In a recent interview, Alex Garland, who wrote the screenplay for the former and executive produced the latter, discussed the long-rumored third entry in the series, tentatively titled 28 Months Later.

Speaking with IGN to promote his directorial debut, Ex Machina, Garland touched on 28 Months Later, revealing that it's more than a movie mirage at this point:

“We’ve got an idea. Danny [Boyle] and [producer] Andrew [Macdonald] and I have been having quite serious conversations about it so it is a possibility. It’s complicated. There’s a whole bunch of reasons why it’s complicated, which are boring so I won’t go into, but there’s a possibility.”

Garland went on to say that the title of the potential third 28 film would likely but not necessarily be 28 Months Later. It's not known who would direct or write 28 Months Later at this time. 28 Days Later was directed by Danny Boyle off Garland's screenplay and followed a man who wakes up from a coma to discover that the Rage virus has transformed London citizens into livid killers.

28 Weeks Later was directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo off a screenplay he wrote with Rowan Joffé, E. L. Lavigne, and Jesus Olmo. The sequel centered on the repopulating of London after the Infected died off. A daunting task overseen by NATO forces, the rebuilding of UK's society was thwarted when the Rage virus resurfaced.

28 Weeks Later ended on a bit of a cliffhanger and a follow-up film has been rumored to be in the works for years, and now it looks like it finally might be moving forward. Stay tuned to Daily Dead for further details.
