Alien Day has officially arrived and Neill Blomkamp celebrated by posting new concept art of an adult Newt from Aliens, teasing the character's potential appearance in Alien 5.
Before Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant was announced last year, it looked like a new Alien sequel from Blomkamp was going to be the next film in the franchise.
The District 9 director teased his vision of an Alien movie, aka Alien 5, through concept art featuring Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley and Michael Biehn’s Cpl. Dwayne Hicks. The new concept art of a grown-up Newt (who was played by Carrie Henn as a young girl in 1986's Aliens) that Blomkamp posted on Instagram (see below) strongly suggests that he is looking to involve the LV-426 survivor in his Alien movie, should it move forward at 20th Century Fox.
Alien fans are well aware that Hicks and Newt were killed abruptly at the beginning of 1992's Alien 3, but Blomkamp's Alien film could potentially bypass that timeline in favor of a sequel that keeps the beloved characters alive for more Xenomorph encounters.
Daily Dead spoke with Michael Biehn at Minneapolis Crypticon last year, and the actor's description of Blomkamp's Alien movie certainly gels with the new concept art:
"My guess is they would bring back Hicks, and Newt is now going to be about twenty-six or twenty-seven [and be played by] some hot, young actress who can really tear it up."
While a release date hasn't been set for Alien 5 and the movie has yet to be officially announced by 20th Century Fox, Sigourney Weaver seems confident that it’s not a matter of if, but when Blomkamp’s Alien movie will get made. Weaver recently spoke optimistically about the film at a VMware event (as reported by AvPGalaxy via Aggressive Comix):
"Ridley [Scott] asked Neill NOT to make our Alien till after Prometheus 2. He (Ridley) wanted his movie to shoot and be released first. But it’s an AMAZING script, and Neill and I are REALLY excited about doing it. We’re doing other things until we can get going on that. I’d be really surprised if we DIDN’T do it, because it’s such a great script, and we love working together. So, it’s just going to take a little bit longer to get out to you, but it’ll be worth the wait."
