Lady Baltimore: The Daughters of Medusa is the next chapter in Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden's Outerverse Universe of books, and the first issue will be available this week from Dark Horse Comics! We previously caught up with artist Bridgit Connell, and we're back with Christopher Golden, who talked all about teaming up with Connell for the latest Lady Baltimore adventure. We also have preview pages you can read right now!
You're teaming up with Mike Mignola and Bridgit Connell once again for Lady Baltimore: The Daughters of Medusa. How did this project come about as the latest Lady Baltimore adventure? Was it something that you had already been thinking about when writing The Witch Queens, and what excited you the most about telling this story?
Christopher Golden: When we were planning out this second volume, I checked in with Bridgit. She’s so immersed in this world and so enthusiastic. I don’t remember the conversation, but I know I asked if there was anything in particular she wanted to draw and she mentioned either Medusa or Gorgons. It dovetailed beautifully with some of the character things I’d been wanting to touch on, and gave us the opportunity to have some great action scenes and super creepy stuff as well.
What's your process when it comes to research for a project like this? Did you dive into previous depictions of Medusa to inform your take on the Gorgon mythology?
Christopher Golden: Writing comics always invites me to do a lot more research than people realize. The scripts are loaded with links to images to inspire, everything from historical structures to weird facial hair to weapons and diving suits and cigarette lighters and vehicles. You never know. I didn’t do any research on the look of the gorgons. I knew Bridgit would be all over that and that what she did would be beautiful. The mythology, as so often happens, is a bit of existing myth and a lot of invention, both with the race of gorgons and their presence in the Outerverse.
What's your experience been like with Bridgit Connell as a creative collaborator?
Christopher Golden: Bridgit’s excitement is really contagious. She’s always worried she’s bothering me, but she never is. I love the questions, the ideas, the passion she has for the characters and their world. We’ve already discussed her coming on to co-write in the next volume. She doesn’t have a history of that, but you can just sense while talking to her that she should be writing and drawing her own comics, and I suspect she’ll be doing some of that down the line. It’s such a gift that artists like Bridgit and the great Peter Bergting choose to work on these comics with us, when they absolutely have the talent and creativity to do it all themselves.
Can you give our readers a tease of what you're excited for them to experience over the course of Lady Baltimore: The Daughters of Medusa? And are you and Mike Mignola already cooking up new adventures for Lady Baltimore? I assume it won't be too long before we see more tales.
Christopher Golden: I loved getting into what I think of as the living mythology of the race of gorgons in this world, their hierarchy, their politics. It starts as a kind of supernatural murder mystery in the midst of WW2 and spins out from there. We also get to explore a bit more with a couple of members of Lady Baltimore’s crew, particularly Josephine. There’s a bit of romance in there, and a bit of very intentional commentary on some of the evil in the world. You’ll see. It’s a bit subtle, but with luck, it’ll piss off all the right people. As for further stories…I’ve already given that away. They’re coming.
Can you tell us a bit about your creative workspace? What's your setup or process that allows you to be in a creative headspace?
Christopher Golden: Hah! I’ve been at the same desk in the same home office for three decades. Getting into the creative headspace is always, after the procrastination, a matter of getting my ass in the chair and getting to work.
