This Nightmare Kills Fascists Q&A with Matt Miner: We must discuss the title of the anthology, This Nightmare Kills Fascists. Who came up with it? Was the title one of many?
Matt: The title was a collaboration between me and the co-editor Eric Palicki. Eric came up with the idea to do a play on Woody Guthrie's “This Machine Kills Fascists” sticker, and I came up with the nightmare part. It's definitely a nod to Guthrie's idea of using art as a political tool.
The cover artwork is absolutely stunning. I know that Ben Bishop created the artwork, but is there anything that you would like to tell the readers about the cover artwork? The statue looks perhaps like a Lovecraftian-inspired creature.
Matt: Ben's an incredible artist and when Eric and I talked about reaching out to him we agreed that we should just let him do his own thing that speaks to the theme of the book. The result was definitely a Cthulhu-Abe-Lincoln thing and it's incredible. He absolutely killed it.
This project has an impressive list of artists and writers attached. Was it difficult to get everyone together? You guys create a lot of wonderful content throughout the year, so I'm sure you all have your hands full.
Matt: Everyone on the project is friends and folks we've known in comics for awhile – massively talented people with similar political views. It wasn't hard to get people aboard, really – I think we're all feeling a little blindsided by what's going on in the country and shell-shocked and worried and looking for an outlet to vent our frustrations and give voice to our anxieties. I'm happy we have this opportunity.
This Nightmare Kills Fascists uses horror to discuss the current political climate. What are some of your favorite films/television/comics that also utilize horror or sci-fi elements to tackle politics or humanity in general?
Matt: I'm a big fan of anything from Star Wars and Star Trek to Children of Men to the Black Mirror series on Netflix. So much of my favorite sci-fi and horror has political undertones, from the more subtle like Battlestar Galactica to the really overt like V for Vendetta.
There is a Kickstarter campaign for This Nightmare Kills Fascists. Would you like to discuss the campaign for our readers?
Matt: Well, we don't have a lot of time left to make the book happen, so if the idea of horror stories in the style of CREEPY or EERIE, told against the backdrop of modern political anxieties sounds like something you'd like, please visit NIGHTMAREKICKSTARTER.COM and pledge. If we don't hit 100% of goal then Kickstarter doesn't collect any of the money and we won't be able to make the book.
Where can people connect with you on social media?
Matt: I'm on Twitter at @MattMinerXVX, and on Facebook at facebook.com/mattminercomics and I have a website over at mattminerxvx.com. Also, you can check out my dog rescue work at redemptionrescues.org
