For years now, fans have been teased with the possibility of Ghostbusters 3, but it has always been said that Bill Murray was the hold up and that a movie would not likely be made without him. During an appearance on The Dennis Miller Show, Dan Aykroyd gave a status update and says that they plan to film regardless of Bill Murray's involvement:

"Yes, we will be doing the movie and hopefully with Mr. Murray...That is our hope. We have an excellent script. What we have to remember is that 'Ghostbusters' is bigger than any one component, although Billy was absolutely the lead and contributive to it in a massive way, as was the director and Harold [Ramis], myself and Sigourney [Weaver]. The concept is much larger than any individual role and the promise of 'Ghostbusters 3' is that we get to hand the equipment and the franchise down to new blood."

He also talks a bit about why Ray and Egon are in serious need of new help: "My character, Ray, is now blind in one eye and can't drive the cadillac... He's got a bad knee and can't carry the packs... Egon is too large to get into the harness. We need young blood and that's the promise. We're gonna hand it to a new generation."

Dan Aykroyd hinted that filming would begin in spring 2012, but the studio has the last say in all of this and we've heard Dan Aykroyd talking about Ghostbusters 3 filming soon for years now. The new information here is the possibility that they will move forward without Bill Murray's involvement if necessary, but don't get excited about Ghostbusters 3 filming until it receives the green light from the studio and we have an official cast list.
