The search for a new director for the sequel to 2013's World War Z has taken an intriguing turn, as Variety reports that David Fincher (Gone Girl, 2011's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) is in early talks to helm the follow-up film.
According to Variety, Fincher has been having discussions with Brad Pitt, Paramount Pictures, and Skydance about potentially directing World War Z 2. No deal is finalized at this point, but things seem to have taken a promising turn, as Variety states that "negotiations are much further down the road" than they were when talks began a couple of weeks ago, and that a deal could be on the table.
If Fincher does take the helm of the sequel, it would be his fourth movie with Pitt, as the two have already worked together on Se7en, Fight Club, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
J.A. Bayona (A Monster Calls, The Impossible) was previously attached to direct the World War Z sequel, but he had to leave the project due to scheduling conflicts with prior commitments. Based on Max Brooks' 2006 book of the same name, the first World War Z film was directed by Marc Foster and grossed $540 million globally.
The World War Z sequel is currently slated to come out on June 9th, 2017 from Paramount Pictures, but a schedule delay is likely. No official story details have been revealed at this time.
