Si Spurrier: "It's never less than fascinating to peer behind the scenes of the artist's process. With a book like The Voice Said Kill that's especially true. This could so easily have been a straight-down-the-pipe crime thriller, with a plot that's tighter than a drum and a kaleidoscope of fascinating characters. That, alone, would have been enough. But the themes and ideas that bubble beneath—the depths of the main character's meditative mind, her anxieties and pleasures—all of these things are given an extra layer of visibility and resonance by Vanesa's work. Seeing pages arrive in my inbox in various states of completion has had me diving back into the scripts, adjusting lines, deleting whole conversations, recognizing that this transcendent sensory experience is so much more powerful when it's given space to breathe. It's the purest expression of the alchemy of comics: that magical collaboration that makes the whole so much greater than the sum of its parts. Story, words, art; not only working to support one another but also sending out fruiting bodies in opposite directions, covering a far broader spectrum of the reader's mind. It's additive in the truest sense."
Vanesa Del Rey: “I’ve lived near swampy areas most of my life. Starting with growing up in La Habana, Cuba. It’s an island in the Caribbean, surrounded by swampland. My grandma's house was near a bayou in the village of Playa Baracoa. In the United States, I lived in Miami, Florida, where we have the beautiful Everglades! It’s vast areas and there is more mix of fresh water and salt water. I’ve lived in Shreveport, Louisiana for some time. The bayou there is more intricate. Has dense vegetation, small meandering waterways.”
