There’s no denying that the 1980s were easily the most influential era in modern horror, between all of the incredible movies and filmmakers that rose through the ranks and changed the landscape of pop culture, the mind-blowing special effects that continued to raise the bar for the industry, and a cavalcade of memorable characters and performances that have continued to endear themselves to legions of fans in the years to come. Simply put, ’80s horror is the best.

Right now, the Kickstarter campaign for In Search of Darkness is nearing the finish line, with only a few days left for genre fans to join in on what is going to be the definitive look at this influential decade in horror history, and one of the latest stretch goals announced for In Search of Darkness is all about celebrating the women who slayed throughout the 1980s.

As a girl growing up during this time, there were so many exceptional female characters that I grew up not only admiring, but also aspiring to become as well. The strength they showed on the screen, the way their gender never defined their limitations, and how their talents continue to inspire new generations of fans prove that these ladies are so incredibly important to the realm of horror cinema, and are absolutely deserving of some extra time in the spotlight.

It’s been a huge honor for me to be a part of the Advisory Board for the upcoming In Search of Darkness documentary, and hitting this final milestone is hugely important to me personally, as not only is it incredibly exciting to me to have so many talented women participating in this project, but I would love to see their talents and careers celebrated in an even bigger way, and this new stretch goal helps make that possible.

Here are some of the remarkable women who helped define 1980s horror that are currently involved with In Search of Darkness:

  • Barbara Crampton
  • Adrienne Barbeau
  • Dee Wallace
  • Heather Langenkamp
  • Caroline Williams
  • Lisa Wilcox
  • Kelli Maroney
  • Robbi Morgan
