Hellboy creator Mike Mignola teams up with artist Giuseppe Manunta in his English-language debut for the brand-new Hellboy one-shot, titled Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: Professor Harvey is Gone. Written by Mignola, drawn and colored by Manunta, and lettered by Clem Robins, the new story "delves into Hellboy’s past as the paranormal investigator takes up the search for a missing antiquities professor."

Due out on August 27th from Dark Horse Comics, here's what Mignola had to say about the recent collaboration with Manunta:

“I’m a big fan of Giuseppe’s work so I was thrilled when he told me he wanted to do a Hellboy story—The only problem was that I had sort of (finally) run out of Hellboy stories,” says Mike Mignola. ”My head is so much in my new LANDS UNKNOWN series now that for a while I was really drawing a blank. Then I remembered a plot I had given to Chris Golden a while back. He wrote it up as a Hellboy story for Weird Tales magazine (THE CITY IN THE SEA—Weird Tales issue 367) but that was an unillustrated prose story and there were (I thought) some terrific visuals in that story so I thought Giuseppe would be a terrific artist to put those on paper. So I reworked that original story and idea and turned it over to Giuseppe to work his magic.”

Ahead of the 32-page one-shot's release this week, I caught up with Manunta for a new Q&A to discuss his work on the new Hellboy story. We also have a 5-page preview you can read right now!

What role did Hellboy and the work of Mike Mignola play in your love of comic books and comic book art over the years?

Giuseppe Manunta: When I first read Hellboy in 1994, I was shocked! Nothing like it had ever been seen before in Italy. At the time, I was starting to publish my first stories in a realistic, traditional style, and I was blown away by Mike's approach and his Lovecraft-inspired universe, which I adore. In a way, it also inspired one of my erotic characters, Giunchiglia.(see image)

How did your collaboration with Mike Mignola on Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: Professor Harvey is Gone come about? I understand that Mignola has been a big fan of your work.

Giuseppe Manunta: I was truly honoured and happy when I discovered that Mike loved my work. It was 2023. We started exchanging short messages, and then, on the occasion of Hellboy's 30^(th) anniversary, I asked Mike if I could write a Hellboy story. It wasn't easy, but we succeeded in the end.

Can you talk about the creative process of working with Mike Mignola on this one-shot?

Giuseppe Manunta: I initially proposed my own script, but Mike wasn't keen on it. He thought it wasn't faithful enough to the comic book character, and that it was too similar to the film version. So, he proposed his own idea, and everything went smoothly.

As the title implies, this story revolves around a missing Professor Harvey. Can you give our readers a tease of what the horrors that await Hellboy in this story?

Giuseppe Manunta: Our hero will find himself dragged into an extra-temporal dimension. He will be forced to face monsters straight out of my worst nightmares and encounter a beautiful queen with a nasty habit of devouring her lovers.

Aside from Hellboy, do you have any other upcoming projects you'd like to share with our readers?

Giuseppe Manunta: I am currently working on the second episode of "Une Table pour 3", a crime series for the European market. The series tells the story of two Italian chef twins who find themselves caught up in dangerous adventures at the hands of a Neapolitan mafia boss.
