We've been covering Insidious in our weekend box office round-ups, but a recent article reveals that it is currently the most profitable movie of the year. With a budget of under $1.5 million, the film has had staying power at the box office and is expected to pass the $50 million dollar mark in the United States. Including global ticket sales, Insidious stands to make at least 50x what it cost to create.

Similar to Paranormal Activity, Insidious proves that horror films can be just as effective and popular with a low budget than they can with a large budget. James Wan, Jason Blum, Oren Peli and Steven Schneider will all continue to produce and develop smaller budget horror films, and hopefully other companies will follow suit.
