A couple of years back, it looked like a reboot of Escape From New York was going to move forward at New Line with director Breck Eisner. That version fell through, but a new report reveals that the the project has gained momentum once again.

According to Deadline, Joel Silver is teaming up with StudioCanal to create a new franchise based on around Snake Plissken from John Carpenter's Escape From New York. The plan is to start fresh on the material and set it up as a trilogy of films. It was mentioned that the first movie would be a Snake Plissken origin story and the approach has been compared to Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

A writer has yet to be hired, so this is a very early announcement and it's likely that we won't hear much more about the project this year. Names previously considered for the role of Plissken included Gerard Butler, Jeremy Renner, and Tom Hardy.
