As an update to previously reported rumors, it has been confirmed that Julianne Moore was in consideration for the role of Carrie's mother in the upcoming remake and has been offered the role. Deadline revealed that she has been given the script and an official offer to play Margaret White.

Piper Laurie received an Oscar nomination for the role in the original movie, and the hope was to attract a leading actress to the part. Of course, she has not yet signed on, but we'll be sure to update this story when additional casting news comes in.

The remake started picking up steam earlier this year, with Chloe Moretz signing on to play the new Carrie White. The film will be directed by Kimberly Peirce and has an official release date of March 15, 2013. It has previously been reported that this version of Carrie will more closely follow Stephen King's book than the movie, and here are some recent comments from Kimberly Peirce:

“I am also modernizing the story as one has to in order to bring any great piece of work written in one era into the next and especially given how very relevant this material is right now.

Chloe is going deep into character to get this right….sewing her own dresses, spending time in her closet….and so much more….Thanks for all the great wishes. We are on it! And privileged to be working with such great source material.”

There is also a news item floating around today about Carrie containing some found footage elements. A user on Reddit (via Movies.com) talked about recent comments MGM CEO Roger Birnbaum made about the film during a University appearance:

"Carrie, as you all likely know, is being made and has already cast Chloe Moretz (Let Me In) as Carrie. It's intention is to go back and make it more similar to Stephen King's novel. Also, this wasn't entirely clear, but Birnbaum made it sound like it's going to be a "found footage" type of film. The film is going to have interviews with the survivors of the prom incident, and focus on that take."

At the moment just consider this a rumor. If anything, we'd expect something more along the lines of District 9 than Paranormal Activity.
